History of Manchester Barton
Barton Aerodrome, officially known as Manchester Barton Aerodrome, opened in 1930 and is one of the oldest continuously operating civil airports in the United Kingdom. It served as Manchester's principal airport until 1938, when commercial airline operations transferred to the newly opened Manchester Airport.
Throughout its history, Barton has remained at the heart of general aviation in the North West. During the Second World War it supported military flying and pilot training, and in the decades since has become one of the UK's busiest centres for private flying, flight training, aircraft maintenance and recreational aviation.
Today, Barton Aerodrome continues to play an important role in the region's aviation community. Its expansive grass runways, vibrant flying environment and close proximity to Manchester city centre make it a popular destination for student pilots, private aircraft owners and aviation enthusiasts alike, preserving nearly a century of flying heritage while supporting the next generation of pilots.
AeroSchool Manchester Barton
At AeroSchool Manchester, students benefit from training at the historic Barton Aerodrome, one of the UK's busiest and most established general aviation airfields. With multiple grass runways, an active flying environment and excellent access to the Manchester Low Level Route and surrounding controlled airspace, Barton provides an outstanding setting for both ab initio and advanced flight training.
As training progresses, students gain valuable experience operating in a variety of environments. Cross-country flights regularly visit our other AeroSchool bases, including Teesside International Airport and Breighton Airfield, allowing students to experience controlled airports, instrument procedures and grass airfield operations. This varied exposure develops adaptable, confident pilots who are comfortable operating in a wide range of real-world scenarios.
Barton offers an excellent balance of busy circuit activity, navigational opportunities and diverse airspace, giving students extensive experience in radio communication, airmanship and operational decision-making from the very beginning of their training.
Whether you're learning to fly for leisure or pursuing a professional aviation career, AeroSchool Manchester provides a supportive, professional training environment designed to prepare you for every stage of your flying journey.
