NPPL (A) Training

The National Private Pilot Licence (NPPL[A]) is now the UK’s main sub-ICAO licence, following the withdrawal of the LAPL(A) from 1 October 2025. The NPPL(A) is the most accessible, cost-effective route to becoming a pilot in the UK, designed for those who want to fly light aircraft recreationally without the extended commitment of a full ICAO PPL(A).

At AeroSchool, we provide structured training, expert instruction and modern aircraft, ensuring you learn safely, efficiently and enjoyably.

Why Choose the NPPL(A)?
  • Ideal for recreational UK flying with up to 3 passengers.

  • Lower minimum flight time and fewer theoretical exams than the PPL(A).

  • Can be flown on a simple Pilot Medical Declaration (PMD).

  • Provides a clear upgrade route to the PPL(A) if you later want ICAO privileges.

Key Components of NPPL Training at AeroSchool:

1. Ground School – Build Your Theoretical Foundation

Ground school for the NPPL(A) focuses on the essential knowledge you need to fly safely and confidently. You will study five subjects:

  1. Air Law – Rules of the air, responsibilities, airspace classifications, ATC procedures.

  2. Human Performance – Pilot physiology, fatigue, stress, hypoxia and safe decision-making.

  3. Meteorology – Weather systems, charts, forecasts, how weather affects flight.

  4. Navigation – Flight planning, charts, headings, speeds, fuel calculations, use of navigation aids (VOR, GPS).

  5. Aircraft General Knowledge & Principles of Flight (combined) – Aircraft systems, engines, electrics, instrumentation, aerodynamics, lift/drag/thrust/weight.

You will also complete the FRTOL (Flight Radiotelephony Operator’s Licence) to operate aircraft radios legally.

Our ground school combines online learning modules with instructor-led review sessions. Flexible self-study lets you progress at your own pace, while one-to-one tuition is available if needed.

2. Flight Training – Practical, Hands-On Experience:

The NPPL(A) requires a minimum of 32 hours’ training:

  • 22 hours dual instruction with an instructor.

  • 10 hours supervised solo, including:
    • At least 4 hours solo cross-country.
    • A 100 nm Qualifying Cross-Country flight with 2 full-stop landings at other aerodromes.

Your training will cover:

  • Aircraft familiarisation & checks.

  • Basic handling, circuits, take-offs and landings.

  • Emergencies and abnormal procedures.

  • Navigation flights (local and cross-country).

  • Solo flights to build independence.

Our fleet is equipped with modern avionics and maintained to high standards, giving you both confidence and experience with real-world equipment.

3. Flexible and Personalized Learning:

We understand that every student has different needs. That’s why AeroSchool offers a flexible training schedule, allowing you to complete your training at a pace that fits your lifestyle. Whether you're a weekend learner or want to fast-track your training, our instructors work with you to create a personalized plan that keeps you progressing smoothly.

4. Medical Requirements – Simple and Accessible:
  • Most NPPL(A) pilots fly on a Pilot Medical Declaration (PMD) (equivalent to DVLA Group 1 standard).

  • A Class 2 medical can also be used and is required if you later upgrade to a PPL(A).

This makes the NPPL(A) more accessible than the PPL(A), which always requires a Class 2.

5. Exams and Assessments – Streamlined and Supportive:

At AeroSchool, we ensure that you are fully prepared to pass both the theoretical and practical exams required for your LAPL. You’ll take a series of multiple-choice exams on the core subjects, and our instructors will work closely with you, offering review sessions and personalized support to ensure exam success. The bulk of the theoretical training is carried out via our online training platform, allowing you to self-study to fit around your existing lifestyle. One on one tuition is available with instructors as required.

When it’s time for your skills test, our in-depth in-flight preparation will ensure you’re confident and ready to demonstrate your skills to a certified examiner. Unlike most other schools, our examiners are typically in house to provide a seamless link to getting you through your flight skills test.

6. Your First Solo Flight – A Memorable Milestone:

Your first solo flight is an unforgettable experience, and at AeroSchool, we celebrate this achievement with you. Our experienced instructors ensure you’re fully prepared for this significant milestone, allowing you to safely take the controls of the aircraft alone, marking the true beginning of your independent flying journey.

7. NPPL Privileges – Fly for Fun:

With your LAPL, you can:

  • Fly light aircraft within UK airspace with up to 3 passengers.

  • Enjoy recreational flights and local touring.

  • Keep your skills current with AeroSchool's advanced training options and refresher courses.

NPPL holders enjoy a more relaxed set of rules compared to a full PPL, including simpler medical renewals and fewer ongoing requirements, making it ideal for pilots who want to fly recreationally.

8. Expand Your Capabilities with Additional Ratings:

After gaining your NPPL(A), you can expand your privileges with additional ratings such as:

  • Night Rating – fly after sunset.

  • Aerobatic Rating – learn advanced manoeuvres.

  • Differences Training – for aircraft with constant-speed props, EFIS, retractable gear, etc.

9. State-of-the-Art Facilities and Fleet:

AeroSchool provides you with access to top-tier training facilities and a quality fleet of light aircraft. You’ll be flying in comfortable, well-maintained planes, supported by the latest technology.
